How to start training professionally on a bicycle?
Cycling is a great way to improve your fitness and sculpt your physique. It's also worth noting that cycling training has a key advantage: it doesn't put as much strain on our joints as running does, yet it remains incredibly effective. However, you need to know how to train professionally on a bike. Even beginners can take on this task and will quickly find that it isn't as demanding as it may seem. So how do you start training professionally on a bike?
Creating a Training Plan
What characterizes professional cyclists is primarily a precisely structured training plan. Of course, it should be divided into specific stages. The very beginning should not overwhelm our bodies too much, and because we are just starting our journey with professional cycling training, it must be tailored to our skills and, above all, our physical capabilities. Therefore, it's best to initially plan your cycling training in a 2-1 format. In practice, this means two days of training followed by one day of rest. This way, after two weeks, we can slightly intensify our cycling workouts and train in a 3-1 format. Moreover, it's advisable to plan your time so that you dedicate at least 2 hours a day to cycling. However, the first weeks should not be too demanding. So, let's decide to ride at a fairly steady pace and on not overly challenging terrain. Only after the aforementioned two weeks can we move on to dynamic cycling and then tackle hills.
Make Time for Aerobic Training
Your training plan must also include room for so-called intervals. These are aerobic workouts that push us to give our maximum effort. Therefore, it’s worthwhile to incorporate short cycling sprints into our daily training, which we perform at 90% of our capabilities. Such a sprint should usually last no more than 30 seconds, followed by a minute of rest. Sprints along with rest in one series should not last more than 3-4 minutes. There should be about 7-8 such series in one training session. After finishing, it’s advisable to take a break that is even twice as long. Of course, when starting intervals on a bike, it is important to adjust their intensity to your current fitness level.
Consistency is Key
Once we decide to engage in professional cycling training, the most important thing for us should be consistency. It is the key to success and will allow us to maximize our performance improvements. Moreover, if our main goal is weight loss and gaining fitness, then consistent cycling training will help us effectively reach our objectives. It's important to remember that everything comes with time. We can't expect spectacular results after the first two weeks, so it's wise to focus on systematic work in the long term. Let's stick to the established plan and not skip workouts with the idea that we will catch up the next day. Additionally, we can find extra motivation through apps that measure our results. Thanks to them, we can easily monitor our progress and set further goals we want to achieve. Maintaining both internal and external motivation at the right level will make each subsequent cycling training a real pleasure.
