SUP boards - how to paddle standing up?
SUP (short for Stand Up Paddle) is a water sport discipline that involves paddling while standing on a specially designed board similar to a windsurfing board. SUP boards range in length from 250 to 450 cm. It is a very easy sport suitable for everyone. No special skills or fitness levels are required. To participate in this activity, one doesn't need to lead a healthy lifestyle or wait until reaching a certain age. Learning to paddle involves getting a feel for the board, standing up, maintaining balance, and eventually trying to paddle. If a beginner is intimidated or has trouble balancing, they can also paddle in a kneeling position. After some time, they will surely get accustomed to the board and be able to stand on it.
Construction of SUP Boards
SUP boards are divided into two types: inflatable and hard. Inflatable boards are the latest trend among surfboards. Although they need to be inflated before use, they demonstrate stiffness and durability. This is possible due to their construction that allows air to be pumped in at high pressure. The hull of such a board consists of special fibers that connect the bottom with the deck. This way, there is no risk of the board bursting during inflation, and after deflation, it can be folded, saving space. The deck and sides are made from sturdy PVC laminate, giving the board a sense of rigidity. The construction of hard boards resembles that of surfing boards. They consist of a core covered with layers of carbon laminate, fiberglass, epoxy resin, or Kevlar. This gives hard boards rigidity and stability, leading to better performance while paddling. However, compared to inflatable SUPs, they are harder to store and transport. They are also very prone to damage when in contact with hard objects, whereas an inflatable board can withstand a fall from a considerable height onto a hard surface. Therefore, for a beginner, purchasing an inflatable board is recommended.
Parameters
When planning to buy a SUP board, the buyer should focus on several factors that determine the quality of the SUP. The width of the board is the most important of these. It is said that the first SUP should not be narrower than 30 inches. This width is considered a starting width, which lighter individuals should begin their adventure with this sport. Generally, the wider the board, the better the feel and the greater the confidence in maintaining balance.
Another parameter is the board's volume. It is expressed in liters. For beginners, the best boards are those with a volume of over 220 liters.
The thickness of the board is a parameter that theoretically depends on the first two. If the board is wider than 30 inches and has a volume of 220 liters or more, its thickness should be 6 inches. Buyers should choose boards of this thickness. Thick boards are characterized by stability and rigidity, and there is assurance that water won’t easily spill onto the deck.
The last parameter is the pressure to which the SUP can be inflated. Any board that can be inflated to a value of 15 psi will be sufficient for recreational use. Boards with lower pressure will be unstable and will bend under the surfer.
Interestingly, the length of the board is not very significant regarding the comfort of a beginner surfer. When all the parameters are combined, an ideal board for the first encounter with stand-up paddling will emerge.
