Ostrów Lednicki
The Greater Poland Lake District is full of charming lakes. A significant part of it is the Gniezno Lakeland. It is here that Lake Lednica is located, along with Lednicki Island, which was home to one of the most important settlements of the Piast state more than a thousand years ago. Lednicki Island is the largest of the five islands in Lake Lednica. You can reach it by ferry from the First Piasts Museum, which can be accessed from the village of Dziekanowice.
On the island, there are, among other things, the remains of a princely palace with a chapel and defensive ramparts. Archaeologists have discovered baptismal pools here, which may indicate a probable site of Mieszko I's baptism. The island also features the most significant remains of early medieval architecture in Poland.
Lednicki Island is located within the Lednicki Landscape Park, meaning that a visit here allows for not only an encounter with history but also with nature. Every year, cultural events take place here - Children's Day, the Night of Kupala, and activities that combine fun with education. The island can be visited from April to October. There are numerous accommodation options and dining points in the area. While visiting Lednicki Island, it is also worth seeing the open-air museum with numerous archaeological collections, the buildings of the First Piasts Museum, and the nearby Lednica fields, featuring the famous fish-shaped gate - the Gate of the Third Millennium.
