Kętrzyn Castle
Teutonic Castle in Kętrzyn
It was built in the second half of the 14th century. This Gothic structure is located in Kętrzyn on a hill above the Guber River, surrounded by a wall with three towers and an entrance gate from the town side. It has been rebuilt multiple times. In 1945, it was burned down and only restored between 1962 and 1967, in the style of the original Gothic form.
Currently, the castle houses the Wojciech Kętrzyński Museum, the "Konik Mazurski" Gallery, and the Municipal Public Library. The museum has numerous collections from the 15th to the 19th centuries originating from local churches and palaces, which form permanent exhibitions. Among the exhibits, one can see the only children's funeral banner in Europe and a collection of Gothic sculptures. In the "Konik Mazurski" Gallery, regional handicrafts can be viewed and purchased. During the summer months, concerts and fairs are held in the castle courtyard, with the main attraction being the annual Medieval Fair of St. James. The site is part of the Gothic Castle Trail.
