Bobolice Castle
Bobolice Castle – a royal castle in the Eagle Nests Landscape Park, in the Silesian Voivodeship, built by Polish King Casimir the Great, most likely around 1350-1352. It is a very interesting site that has seen much activity lately:
“At the end of the 20th century, the Lasecki family – the current owners of the castle – took on the challenge of restoring this monument. With the help of Polish scientists and experts, archaeological, protective, and reconstruction work was carried out, and in June 2011, a report on the reconstruction appeared in the world media. The official opening of the castle, after twelve years of work, took place on 3rd September 2011.
The reconstruction was completed despite the absence of any plans, sketches, or drawings of the castle; its shape was recreated based on the preserved ruins, aided by the knowledge of historians and archaeologists. Only traditional materials (mainly limestone) were used, and a special mortar was developed.
On the occasion of the opening, congratulatory letters were sent by the President of Poland, Bronisław Komorowski, the Marshal of the Sejm, and the Prime Minister. The reconstruction itself sparked – and still sparks – considerable controversy and criticism from various circles. The site has been described as a Disneyland, a poor replica of a monument, with specialists pointing to the lack of preserved sources regarding its former appearance.” (quoted from Wikipedia)
Today, the fairy-tale building can be visited inside with a guide, and within the castle grounds, there is a hotel complex that offers a range of attractions – balloon flights, horseback riding, kayaking, rock climbing, and in winter – cross-country skiing and sleigh rides with torches.
In the 19th century, a treasure was found in the castle's underground; it is believed that another part may be located in a tunnel between Bobolice and Mirów, of which legends abound.
