The most interesting places in Kętrzyn
Although most tourists visiting the Kętrzyn area will be primarily interested in the nearby Wolf's Lair, the town itself also offers a pleasant stroll through its streets. Historic monuments, a beautifully situated lake, and well-maintained greens are the city's hallmarks, so we invite you to explore!
Even though after the tourist season, Kętrzyn is a sleepy town, it’s worth visiting with children around Christmas, as the functioning Santa Claus Consulate is a relatively new and constantly evolving unique attraction. Nearby, you will also find a historic train station considered one of the best-restored of its kind in the region.
Continuing towards the centre, we will notice the basilica of St. George situated on the hill, often mistaken by tourists for a castle, probably due to its monumental structure visible from a large distance. They won’t be far from the truth as it is the best-preserved defensive church in the region. A must-see is the climb up the church tower, from which most of the town's layout can be seen at a glance. However, on the way up the hill, it is worth stopping, as on our right, we will see the actual Teutonic castle.
The recently renovated castle, built in the 14th century, attracts visitors with its cozy atmosphere and the opportunity to visit a museum featuring an incredible multimedia exhibition about the town's history, which is a must-see. We will also see historic artefacts and photographs illustrating the town's development over the centuries.
After visiting the castle and church, let's head towards the lofty tower of St. Catherine's Church in Kętrzyn. Passing it will lead us to the centre where one can relax in the flower-covered square on the main square, right in front of the neo-Gothic town hall. From here, it’s easy to descend to the valley where Kętrzyn Lake is located – the most popular walking spot among the locals. Besides the cycling path, we will find vending machines with duck food, as there are flocks of ducks here throughout the year. It’s also worth walking across the footbridge to the wooden gazebo with benches situated in the very middle of the body of water. It’s an ideal place to rest after a long walk.
