Kudowa-Zdrój
In the Shadow of Cacti and the Croaking of Frogs – Kudowa-Zdrój
While exploring the charms of the Kłodzko Valley and all its "Spas," one cannot overlook one of the oldest, Kudowa-Zdrój. This small town, with origins dating back to the fourteenth century, is a true spa gem. Our neighbours across the Oder appreciated this when, in the eighteenth century, healing springs were discovered here, making Kudowa a popular resort, recognised as one of the first cardiological spas in Germany.
However, it is worth visiting Kudowa even with a healthy heart. The layout of the town is notable for its characteristics from bygone centuries. We can see elements of planning that date back 500 years. A stroll through the picturesque streets will delight and allow for a journey through time.
Meanwhile, a journey through space allows one to marvel at the most important and famous feature in the town, the Spa Park. Its origins date back to the second half of the eighteenth century, during the time when the potential of this beautiful place was discovered. The complex, covering nearly 13 hectares, is located in the central part of the spa and neighbours Park Mountain. The pond that stretches along its edge directly touches the border with the Czech Republic. Walking around, one can truly feel the international atmosphere of this place. This vibe is created not only by the location but also by the vegetation. Here, you can see huge agaves, cacti, prickly pears, dracaenas, and rhododendrons, as well as less exotic but equally wonderful native species that are protected as natural monuments, such as the Sudeten fir or the approximately 300-year-old wych elm. Between them, colourful floral carpets unfold.
While admiring the beauty of nature, it is worth taking a break to visit the water pump room adorned with unique frescoes depicting Lower Silesia from the early twentieth century.
For those who may tire of the beautiful natural surroundings, Kudowa offers other interesting places. One of them is the Toy Museum with rich collections that will delight both young and old, taking them on a journey through the ages. A smile is sure to appear during a visit to the Ecocentre of the Stołowe Mountains National Park, specifically in one of its sections, the Frog Museum. Here, you can see over 3,000 exhibits – from microscopic glass figurines to plush toys and various-sized exhibits. Fun for everyone is guaranteed.
As you can see, it is worth marking Kudowa on your own map of tourist attractions. Get to know it well, or perhaps use it as a base for day trips around the area. There are plenty of tourist attractions to discover, such as Szczeliniec, the chapel of skulls in Czermna, or the sanctuary in Wambierzyce.
