Mountain Trails [#28] - In Search of Crocuses
Crocuses have always been associated with the rays of the spring sun. As some of the first flowers, they peek their heads out from beneath the last remnants of snow, serving as a clear signal that spring has arrived. While wandering the mountain trails, we can frequently encounter larger and smaller clusters of them. However, it is worth it at least once in a lifetime to visit places where crocuses create a colourful carpet of flowers, and the meadows shimmer in their characteristic purple hue.
When is the best time to see crocuses?
It's best to plan your trip in search of crocuses for the turn of March and April. Although a few of them appear as early as the beginning of March, it's worth being patient and waiting a little longer to enjoy a sea of crocuses. It's advisable to check the weather regularly, as it can significantly disrupt your plans.
Where can we find the most beautiful spots?
The first answer that comes to mind for every tourist is: Chochołowska Valley, which is one of the most recognisable places on the map of the Tatra Mountains. Unfortunately, this means that Chochołowska Clearing attracts thousands of tourists during this period who want to feast their eyes on the purple carpet. Therefore, it's worth visiting during the week when there are significantly fewer tourists. However, if we decide to go on a weekend, make sure to head there very early in the morning – this way, we can avoid sometimes very long queues at the entrance. Another nearby location is Lejowa Valley, where we can also find the desired crocuses, maybe in smaller numbers but certainly in greater peace and quiet.
Not only the Tatra Mountains
The Gorce Mountains also boast crocus meadows, with Turbacz being their undisputed king. Almost every meadow there features patches of crocuses. On Rysianka and Hala Lipowska in the Żywiec Beskids, a crocus surprise awaits us as well. When in the Karkonosze Mountains in spring, make sure to visit the meadows at the foot of Mount Chojnik.
Attention crocus!
For several years now, there has been a campaign called "Not a step further!", aimed at promoting proper tourist behaviour in the spring period. Unfortunately, not all tourists are aware that crocuses are protected in Poland. Despite this, there is still mass trampling of these flowers. Therefore, remember: photograph and admire crocuses from the tourist path, do not pick them!
