Spring cleaning - prepare your car for summer!
The car should be prepared not only for the winter season but also for the spring-summer period. This is the time not just for changing the tyres but also for ensuring its efficiency. With proper preparation, the vehicle can be safely used.
Spring is the time when basic maintenance tasks for the car should be carried out. Especially since, after winter, driving conditions improve, and many people plan summer trips. Checking the car's technical condition will allow for further hassle-free operation and help avoid unpleasant and costly surprises. Check what aspects deserve special attention.
Tire Replacement
This is not only an economic matter but above all a safety concern. Winter tyres lose their properties at higher temperatures, thus reducing their grip and increasing braking distances. The critical temperature is 7 degrees Celsius. The tyres require a tread depth of at least 3 mm. Additionally, the age of the tyres is important. After 10 years of use, they generally lose their properties and need to be replaced with new ones. When changing tyres, it is crucial to ensure the correct pressure and balancing, including the spare wheel.
Thorough Cleaning of the Car
Spring is the perfect time for a thorough cleaning of the entire car, including the undercarriage. This is a way not only to get rid of dirt but also to remove accumulated road salt. Its presence leads to corrosion. A clean undercarriage will allow for a proper assessment of its condition, replacement of worn parts, and protection of the paintwork from damage. The wheel arches also require thorough cleaning. Spring is also an ideal time to clean the interior from post-winter mud and dirt and to air it out. Leaving the car in the sun with the windows open will help eliminate moisture.
Checking the Brakes
These are the components most prone to failure after winter. Low temperatures contribute to their wear. Discs, drums, pads, and brake fluid may not function properly. The latter tends to absorb moisture, which can lead to an entire system not working correctly. Its appropriate parameters guarantee brake sensitivity and effective performance under heavy loads.
Oils and Other Fluids
The most important are those related to the cooling system, which will be heavily used during hot weather. Additionally, it is worth cleaning the radiator from salt and debris, replacing the engine oil and oil filter. These fluids are seasonal and should be replaced regularly. This is particularly important for diesel engines and DPF filters. With moderate use of the vehicle, this may seem uneconomical, but it will certainly reflect positively on its technical condition.
Checking the Ventilation and Air Conditioning System
Most cars currently in use have air conditioning. The cabin filter should be replaced annually to avoid issues with developing mould and bacteria. These can have a very negative effect on human health. An air conditioning inspection includes disinfection, topping up oil in the compressor, and refrigerants.
