Poland Travel [#09] - Spring in the Mountains
Spring in the Mountains – How to Dress for a Spring Mountain Hike?
Mountain hikes are a popular way to spend free time nowadays. When heading to the mountains, it is essential to remember appropriate clothing. Spring weather can be surprising, especially in mountainous regions. So how should you dress for a spring mountain hike?
Jeans – Are They Suitable for Mountain Hikes?
Of course, you can go on mountain hikes wearing jeans. However, anyone who has ever worn technical trousers specifically designed for the mountains is unlikely to return to jeans. What is the reason for this? Trousers intended for mountain hikes are definitely much more comfortable, as they are made from flexible materials. They often feature numerous pockets for storing useful items (such as a map). You can find trousers on the market that are designed in such a way that they can be quickly converted into shorts (by detaching the legs). They are particularly useful in spring when the weather is variable.
Jacket – A Must-Have, Even When It's Warm
Anyone going on a mountain hike should remember to bring a jacket (regardless of the weather at the time of departure). Weather conditions can change drastically during the hike. A jacket provides excellent protection against rain and wind. Dressed this way, you can explore even the coldest places in Poland.
What Shoes to Choose?
Before heading to the mountains, a dilemma usually arises: is it better to wear low or high-cut shoes? In this case, there is no universally better option. Everyone chooses shoes according to their own preferences. Low shoes are lighter and more comfortable, while high ones are significantly warmer. For spring hikes, it is advisable to wear high shoes because you cannot know in advance what weather conditions to expect. When buying shoes for mountain hikes, it is worth paying attention to the material they are made from (the materials should primarily provide waterproofing). Shoes should be selected based on the type of terrain you will be walking on. For muddy and off-road surfaces, boots with deeper treads are recommended. For rocky surfaces, shoes with soles that have high abrasion resistance should be chosen. Footwear should ensure comfort and prevent blisters throughout the entire journey. Well-fitted shoes will guarantee a safe and pleasant walk in hilly terrain.
Bieszczady vs. Tatra Mountains
The types of footwear suitable for Bieszczady differ from those appropriate for walks in the Tatra Mountains. This is due to the types of trails that vary between different mountain ranges. Hiking-class shoes cover the ankle – they are very stable (protect against twisting). They are suitable for hikes in Bieszczady. Trekking-class shoes are intended for more challenging climbs – mainly in the Tatra Mountains. They have a thick and rigid sole and provide protection against moisture (which is especially important in winter). However, they are suitable for all seasons, including spring.
