Exotarium in Sosnowiec
Although the Exotarium in Sosnowiec is a new investment, the history of this place dates back to the 1950s, when the first palm house was established in the park. A few years ago, the city authorities decided to revitalise this site, and today visitors can explore a large facility filled with plants from three climate zones and exotic inhabitants.
Palm Houses in Silesia
There are about 10 palm houses operating in Poland, but in the Silesian Voivodeship alone, there are as many as two: the palm house in Gliwice and the Exotarium in Sosnowiec. The latter was reopened in a new form at the end of 2023, and it must be said that it is continuously filled with visitors. Although many plants still need a lot of time to impress with their size, the number of species and varieties is already impressive. The Exotarium, along with the botanical garden located next to the building, is situated in the Jan Fusiński Park in Sosnowiec, creating an Ecological Education Centre.
Plants in the Exotarium
The Sosnowiec Exotarium is divided into three climate zones: tropical, Mediterranean, and desert. In each of them, you can observe vegetation characteristic of the respective climates: olive trees, aloes, impressive cacti in numerous varieties, plenty of orchids, palms, and a mass of other beautiful tropical plants. However, it should be remembered that in each zone, proper temperature and humidity must be maintained, so when going for a walk in the palm house, it is advisable to dress lightly and bring water with you.
Animals in the Exotarium
The Exotarium is spread over three levels. On the lowest level, you can admire gigantic aquariums with beautiful specimens of colourful fish. I must emphasise that this part truly makes a stunning impression. Further into the palm house, there is quite a large family of various animals, including locusts, stick insects, various spiders, numerous reptiles and amphibians, such as the impressive boa constrictor, reticulated python, basilisk, caiman (from the alligator family)... There’s a long list to mention. Among the plants, there are also adorable armadillos and turtles in their enclosures, while in large cages, magnificent toucans, cockatoos, and parrots await.
Is it worth going to the Exotarium in Sosnowiec?
Of course, it is worth it. Each palm house allows you to momentarily transport to another world. The one in Sosnowiec covers almost 6700 m2, reaching nearly 23 m at its highest point, making the journey through the climate zones truly impressive.
