Where is Karpacz?
Karpacz is a town located in the south-western part of Poland. It is administratively part of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship and is approximately 120 km away from its capital, Wrocław. This distance can be covered in just over 2 hours, and good transport connections with Wrocław and other cities and regions in Poland make the town a popular destination in both summer and winter. Karpacz is often chosen by tourists and mountain lovers from large cities such as Poznań, Szczecin, Łódź, Opole, Zielona Góra, Gorzów Wielkopolski, Kalisz, Leszno, and Legnica. The town is also frequently visited by residents of the provinces of Lower Silesia, Opole, Greater Poland, Lubusz, West Pomerania, Silesia, and Kuyavian-Pomeranian, but those eager to experience the unique local nature come here from many other, even the most distant corners of Poland. Due to its location, Karpacz is also a tourist destination for residents from abroad, particularly from neighbouring countries – the Czech Republic and Germany. Karpacz directly borders the Czech Republic, which in itself is a great attraction for visitors. Besides geographical factors, historical intricacies also influence the frequency of visits from our neighbours, as the town has a past that included both Czech and German ownership.
The nature of Karpacz is undoubtedly the strongest magnet attracting visitors here. Karpacz is situated at the foot of the Karkonosze mountains and its administrative borders encompass a large part of the range. Within Karpacz, there are many interesting and scenic hiking trails and unique mountain spots. Undoubtedly, the most popular tourist attraction here is Śnieżka, which, at 1603 m above sea level, is the highest peak of the Karkonosze mountains and the entire Sudetes, as well as of Lower Silesia and the Czech Republic. Additionally, in Karpacz, we find beautiful forests, mountain lakes, and babbling brooks, providing invaluable relief during hikes.
An advantage of Karpacz is its proximity to fantastic places, making the town an excellent base for trips, particularly to the Czech Republic as well as Germany. We can quickly get to the capital of our southern neighbours – Prague. The distance we need to cover between the towns is just 170 km, which we can travel by car in less than 3 hours, making it a pleasant option to take a day trip from Karpacz to Prague. We can also easily reach the charming German city of Dresden, which is 200 km away from Karpacz.
What to do in Karpacz during summer?
Karpacz is a great option for a summer travel destination. The local nature, whose uniqueness has been appreciated at an international level, ensures that staying here will almost guarantee a blissful rest. When visiting Karpacz, make sure to hit the trails of the Karkonosze National Park. We have at our disposal a dense network of hiking paths, notably the trails leading to Śnieżka, to the PTTK "Samotnia" Hostel in the Valley of the Little Pond, and to Równia pod Śnieżką via the Słonecznik rock formations.
The first mentioned trail – the most popular one – guarantees beautiful views, but keep in mind that it is quite a long route, so you should first consider if you can handle the distance and elevation. The trail leading to the "Samotnia" hostel, on the other hand, is a very calm and easy hiking option, especially for the younger ones and families with children. The route mainly leads through fragrant forest areas, and the views in the Little Pond Bowl are enchanting. Even more stunning panoramas await us on the trail to Równia pod Śnieżką, where we pass impressive viewpoints over the Large and Small Ponds.
When visiting Karpacz, do not forget about its rich historical heritage. Here you can touch centuries-old history that has shaped the town and region over the years. Among the most interesting sites is the Wang Temple – a medieval church built in Norway and then transported by waterways and land to Karpacz Górny.
