Polish Traveller [#22] - How to dress for a summer mountain hike?
Hiking remains an incredibly popular way to spend summer and vacation days. When planning a trip to the mountains, it is important to prepare your clothing well. Despite higher temperatures than in other seasons, summer weather can surprise with its variability and dynamics.
One must plan their outfit and accessories from head to toe. It is not uncommon to see people on the trails dressed in flip-flops or without any head protection. A frequent issue is being unprepared in terms of food and drink, as has been reported several times on television regarding rescue operations.
Shoes - what else but sandals?
It is obvious that when going to the mountains, regardless of the season, well-chosen footwear is crucial. However, aside from shoes, socks are also very important. On the market, you can find hiking socks and recently a wider range of running or sports socks that also perform excellently over long distances. They are perfectly adapted to the shape of the foot, preventing blisters and chafing.
When choosing shoes for mountain hiking, consider the terrain type they will be used on. The Tatra Mountains feature rocky trails, while the Bieszczady Mountains have dirt paths. Generally, shoes with deep Vibram soles perform well. One can ponder whether to take high or low shoes. It is important that they fit the foot well and have been tested prior to going into the mountains.
Trousers - short or long?
The specific nature of the mountains means that the temperature difference between the ascent and the summit can be significant. This means that when starting a hike, one might experience heat, while at the summit the weather can be quite different - wind and lingering snow can make the perceived temperature low. Such a situation makes it worthwhile to choose long, comfortable trousers that are also practical. They could be running, hiking, or sweatpants.
Shirt - is a short sleeve sufficient in hot summer?
Remember to bring a long-sleeved item, as it can get cold in the mountains quickly. It is also advisable to pack a raincoat. A simple disposable rain poncho costing a few pounds can save space in the backpack, but there are also thin jackets that protect against rain and wind.
Head - how to avoid an evening headache after a whole day in the sun and wind?
To protect the head, hats lead the way, but multifunctional bandanas, neck gaiters, and buffs are also good options. It is precisely buffs that are particularly popular because of their versatility. They can serve as hats, scarves, wristbands, and many other functions.
And what about little travelers?
Having small children is not a reason to forgo trips. There is a wide range of slings, carriers, and travel strollers available.
Is it really true that you want to eat less in summer?
We should also remember to bring enough supplies of food for the journey - during hiking tours, you tend to get hungrier. We can use food containers that insulate well against heat, keeping our meals fresh for several hours in bright sunshine. When taking children along, also prepare more food. If using disposable packaging, remember to take your trash with you or dispose of it only in designated bins.
Water supplies are extremely important - at least two litres per person. We can use disposable plastic bottles or reusable water bottles with filters, hydration bladders, or water pouches.
It's worth packing a first aid kit.
Also protect your skin from the sun's rays and before heading out on the trail, apply high SPF sunscreen. Refresh its application when you sweat or wet your skin. Adhesive bandages will also be handy in case of blisters, cuts, and chafing.
So, what should you pack considering your clothing essentials, water, and food?
A wide range of backpacks offers enormous possibilities for selection. They can be chosen based on capacity and additional accessories. A useful item is a camelbak, which is a water reservoir commonly used by runners.
