Mountain Trails [#48] - Tarnica
Tarnica, rising to a height of 1346 m above sea level, is the highest peak of the Polish Bieszczady Mountains and one of the most picturesque places in this part of Poland. Located in the heart of the Bieszczady National Park, it attracts tourists not only due to its location but, above all, thanks to the incredible views that can be admired from its summit.
The trail to Tarnica
The most popular and recommended trail leading to Tarnica is the blue trail from Wołosate. This route is ideal for both beginners and more experienced hikers. The trail is 4.3 km long and gains an elevation of 610 m. The average time to reach the summit is about 2 hours and 5 minutes. The route leads from Wołosate through the Pass below Tarnica, from where it's only a short distance to the peak. Returning the same way allows for additional enjoyment of the charms of Bieszczady nature.
Tarnica in the Crown of Polish Mountains
Tarnica, being the highest peak of the Polish Bieszczady Mountains, holds an esteemed place in the Crown of Polish Mountains – a challenge for mountain lovers who wish to conquer the highest elevations of each of the major mountain ranges in Poland. Climbing Tarnica is not only a matter of physical effort but also the fulfilment of dreams for many hikers. Proof of reaching the summit can be a stamp available at the ticket offices of the Bieszczady National Park and a photo taken against the backdrop of the characteristic cross located at the peak.
Panorama from Tarnica
Tarnica is one of the best viewpoints in the Polish Bieszczady Mountains. In favourable weather, one can see not only the nearby ridges, such as Połonina Caryńska, but also more distant mountain ranges, including the Tatras and the Ukrainian Gorgany. These extraordinary views make Tarnica a unique and unforgettable place for every tourist.
The Cross on Tarnica
The cross at the summit of Tarnica is not only a religious symbol but also an important element of the Bieszczady landscape. It was erected in 1987 to commemorate the visit of Karol Wojtyła in 1953. The first cross, which was 7 meters tall, was destroyed by harsh weather conditions in 2000. In its place, a new 8.5-meter steel cross was erected in September of the same year, which still towers over the summit of Tarnica, reminding visitors of the spiritual and historical value of this site.
Tarnica is not only the highest peak in the Bieszczady Mountains but also a place full of history, symbolism, and unforgettable views. The best way to reach it is by choosing the blue trail from Wołosate, which offers an ideal combination of moderate physical effort and the reward of breathtaking views. Regardless of the season, Tarnica provides unique experiences that make one want to return.
