Mountain Trails [#26] - Orla Perć
Zawrat, Kozia Przełęcz, Kozi Wierch, Skrajny Granat, Krzyżne - known as Orla Perć. One of the most difficult and longest ridge trails that we can tackle in the High Tatras on the Polish side. Let us not be misled by the aids in the form of ladders, chains, and grips that await us there - the trail requires not only familiarity with heights and exposure but also good physical condition. Equally important is to plan the entire route well, possibly dividing it into sections if we are unable to complete the trail in one day. We should remember that in the mountains, especially high ones, the weather is very important; hence, before embarking on such a challenging trail, we should carefully check the weather forecast in advance – after all, hiking in the rain along a ridge at an altitude of over 2000 m above sea level can be quite a challenge even for the most seasoned hiker.
What should we prepare for?
Although traversing Orla Perć (without the approach and descent trails) is only 4.1 km, we should be prepared for a full day of hiking (it may take us from 6 to 9 hours). After all, in this short stretch, we have to overcome about 600 meters of elevation gain in very challenging terrain with significant exposure.
Where to start?
Zawrat 2158 m above sea level, which can be accessed from two places. We can choose between the Shelter in the Valley of Five Polish Ponds and Murowaniec Shelter in the Gąsienicowa Glade. It is worth spending the night there, as we will not waste precious time getting to them in the morning, and as we know, Orla Perć requires quite a long hike. The ascent via the blue trail from the Valley of Five Polish Ponds is definitely easier.
Stages
Zawrat - Kozi Wierch – remember that here we will be moving in a one-way direction. This is the most difficult section of Orla Perć. A significant challenge is to get through the famous ladder.
Kozi Wierch – Skrajny Granat – one of the easier parts of Orla Perć. The short climb through the chimney of Czarnego Mniszka and passing above the famous crevasse near Skrajna Sieczkowa Pass (where we will find grips and chains) will be a challenge for those less familiar with demanding terrain.
Skrajny Granat - Krzyżne – the last stage of Orla Perć. It is worth being cautious of the rocks, which in this section are definitely more fragile.
Remember! Only those with significant experience in mountain hiking and familiarity with exposure should decide to hike Orla Perć. Improper planning of the hike, lack of appropriate skills in exposed terrain, or setting out on the trail despite bad weather – these mistakes can be exceedingly dangerous.
