Defensive stronghold on Mount Birów
The defensive settlement on Mount Birów - a settlement situated in a very picturesque setting at the top of a hill, guaranteeing an interesting panorama of the surrounding hills, forests, and fields all the way to the horizon, as well as a view of the impressive walls of the castle in Ogrodzieniec (located just 1200 m away in a straight line).
The history of the mountain is fascinating - during archaeological research, traces of settlement were found here, the oldest belonging to reindeer and bear hunters from 30,000 years ago. The 8th century marks the time of the functioning of a Slavic settlement on Mount Birów, of which a burial site remains, the only such site in the Jura. From the 10th to the 13th century, there was a wooden defensive settlement here, which was burned down during the Polish-Czech battle in the 14th century. Archaeologists discovered a well-preserved silver coin from Prague dated to Wenceslaus II. After the fire, the settlement was never rebuilt. The current reconstruction of the settlement was built in 2008 and is quite an interesting point on the map of Jura attractions.
