Lądek-Zdrój
We are going to the waters - a visit to Lądek-Zdrój
Among the many Polish health resorts, one particularly noteworthy is the one located in the Kłodzko county, by the Biała Lądecka River – Lądek-Zdrój. Why? This town, which received its city rights at the end of the 13th century, is one of the most famous and oldest spa resorts in Poland. Less than a hundred years later, the first health resorts were established in the town, including the still existing “Jerzy” and “Wojciech” sources. Both are equally beautiful, but it is “Wojciech” that boasts unique neo-baroque decorations. The visit to this establishment is further enhanced by the fact that it has hosted such celebrities as Prussian King Frederick II, Empress Catherine, and more contemporary dignitaries – Cyrankiewicz and Gomółka.
Once the soul and body have been saturated with the spa atmosphere, it is worth moving to the Market Square. The colourful tenements surrounding it could tell many stories, as Lądek had the good fortune to survive the Second World War without any damage, being one of the few Lower Silesian towns to do so. The seven-metre-high statue of the Holy Trinity in the square is also striking. This 18th-century monument was a votive offering for saving the town from fire. The rich decorations and depictions of numerous saints are truly stunning. We will leave the parish church dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in a similarly spiritual mood, where baroque architecture surrounds the worshippers from all sides.
When setting off on a trip to Lądek, one should not forget about its surroundings, which are also full of attractions. One of the undeniable tourist highlights is the covered bridge spanning the Biała Lądecka River. The ambitions of climbing enthusiasts can be satisfied by a trip to the Lądek rock formations – in the area of Trojak and Sztolne Skały. This is a paradise for both novice and advanced climbers.
The cherry on Lądek’s cake may be a visit to the castle on the Rock. But that is a completely different story.
