Marycha on the Edge: The Multicultural Sejny
Those who have been to Sejny already know; those who have not yet arrived there should know that you can meet Marycha. Sometimes it’s hard to notice her – she shyly circles around, trying to hide from curious gazes. But as soon as the rain falls heavily, she immediately makes her presence known. Marycha is the river flowing through Sejny. And what other tourist attractions await the explorers of Suwałki region?
First and foremost, the well-known Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, famous throughout the country. It is a former Dominican church from the early 17th century, built in the Vilnius Baroque style. It is one of two such temples on Polish territory. As befits a Baroque object, it is beautifully decorated and impresses with its furnishings. However, its most valuable element is the Gothic shrine figure depicting the Madonna with Child, in the form of a triptych. Unassuming and almost disappearing against the background of the church’s gilding, it serves as an object of worship and a pilgrimage destination for the faithful from the country and abroad.
Also noteworthy is the Dominican monastery complex located in close proximity. The building resembles more of a fortified fortress due to its corner round towers topped with helmets. However, one should not be deceived by appearances – the interiors once served the monks. Today, the building houses the Museum of the Diocese of Sejny. An ethnographic museum is also being established there, which aims to showcase the cultural richness of the region.
You can learn about its Polish-Lithuanian history by visiting the nearby Museum of Sejny Land. Familiarizing oneself with its collections not only enriches knowledge about the region but also sparks curiosity. Among the exhibits, there are numerous Judaica – souvenirs from the once numerous Jewish community in Sejny. The White Synagogue also serves as a reminder of them – once a place of worship, today a cultural object managed by the Borderland Foundation. Because Sejny is a borderland – of cultures, nations, and arts.
